As someone with curly hair, I am excited to discover that Dove has launched new curly girl emojis as a part of their love your curl’s campaign! As more and more women are embracing their curls it is great to see the world around us shifting and changing to accommodate. We have recently seen barbie dolls of color with ethnic hair textures, comic books with curly haired superheros, and now curly girl emojis. The curly girl hair movement is taking off!

It isn’t all fun and smiles though. According to HuffingtonPost:

“Dove launched ‘Love Your Curls’ after conducting a survey of 859 women in the U.S., U.K. and Brazil in September 2014. Only 10 percent of women respondents in the U.S. said they ‘feel proud’ of their curly hair, and only four in 10 American girls with curly hair reported thinking that their hair was beautiful.”

Hopefully this will be another confidence booster for them.

But, yet there is controversy over Dove’s love your curls ad campaigns. Some think that Dove is trying to capitalize off the “black hair movement” where women of color are “going natural” and embracing the texture that they are born with. They feel the ads are a distortion of that movement as it features Caucasian and bi-racial women with looser textures. They argue that these women do not know the struggle of having their hair dubbed as socially unacceptable and unprofessional. (See: the problem with Dove’s love your curls campaign). Additionally, the emojis don’t feature women of color either. To pull up a woman with ebony skin you have to go to the gif’s.

Nonetheless, the dark women are there and many are excited about the campaign and think that it is a great step in the right direction.

Below is the original video from earlier this year in case you haven’t watched it yet or want to see it again! Go team curly!
